Treatment
A
full-scale cancer treatment center like Providence Cancer
Center offers several types of treatments to meet the various
needs of patients. Medical oncology is available for patients
who will benefit from chemotherapy; surgical oncology refers
to the actual removal of cancerous sites; and radiation oncology
is the use of radiation to treat cancer. Some
patients will benefit from a combination of these treatments,
and our physicians will work together with you and your family
to determine the best methods.
Hope

Oncology Unit
Sacred Heart and Holy Family's oncology units provide care
for both inpatients and outpatients. When cancer patients
have complex chemotherapy, stem cell transplants, biotherapy,
hormonal therapy, blood transfusions or symptoms related to
disease or treatment, they may be hospitalized. Our committed
staff has specialized training in cancer care and seek to
treat the whole person.
Our interdisciplinary team includes registered nurses, certified
nurse aides, social workers, case managers, dieticians, physical
therapists, speech therapists, respiratory therapists, chaplains,
pharmacists and others when necessary. These members consult
regularly to provide the best care possible. The unit clinical
pharmacist consults with the team making sure your chemotherapy
and pain management needs are met and teaches you about drug
reactions and interactions.
Nurses are locally trained to administer chemotherapy through
a program that is certified by the Oncology Nursing Society
(ONS). All RNs maintain this chemotherapy certification. In
addition, over 60% of the
nurses have passed a national oncology nursing exam.
Radiation Oncology
Sacred Heart Medical Center and Holy Family Hospital have
provided radiation therapy to the community for over 30 years,
offering quality care along with state-of-the-art equipment.
Radiation therapy is used today in more than half of all cancer
treatments due to its unique clinical advantages and it is
becoming steadily more effective with new technologies that
permit ultra-precise dose delivery.
Machines called linear accelerators provide low and high
doses with extreme precision, thanks to the use of three-dimensional
images. Other technology monitors, records and verifies each
treatment delivered, to help insure the most accurate treatment.
Services:
-
IMRT – Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy is
one of the most precise and sophisticated treatments in
the world. Its three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy
delivers the optimum treatment of radiation for each patient.
-
Prostate seed brachytherapy – Permanent implantation
of Iodine-125 or Palladium-103 using trans-urethral ultrasound.
-
Stereotactic radiotherapy – High dose single or
multiple fractions of 3-D conformally shaped treatment
fields which are aligned through an internal reference
coordinate system. This procedure is offered for both
benign (i.e. Acoustic Neuroma and Arterio-venous Malformation)
and malignancy lesions located within the brain
-
Cesium-137 treatment of the cervix and endometrium is
also available
